The Columbus Dispatch: Lightning general manager Jay Feaster said he’d made pitches for Denis in January, February and before the trade deadline in March. He also had an open dialogue with Blue Jackets president and GM Doug MacLean as the draft came and went last weekend.
«We have a very high regard for Marc Denis," Feaster said. «We have a very high regard not just from the standpoint of his ability and his potential — our people think there’s an even higher level to his game he has yet to get to — but also a high regard for him as a person.»
One deal that was rumored before the trade deadline was Denis for winger Ruslan Fedotenko, goaltender John Grahame and a second-round draft pick. Nothing got done, Feaster said, until Modin was included.
«I have some coaches who are upset with me because, as much as they’re excited about Marc Denis, they didn’t want to lose Fred Modin," Feaster said. «Doug MacLean and his people did their homework. They knew who they wanted. We have no reason to believe that Fred Modin won’t go ahead and have another 30-goal season and be the excellent twoway player he has always been.»

The Tampa Tribune: Tampa Bay signed recently acquired goaltender Marc Denis to a three-year contract worth $8.6 million Tuesday, locking in an important piece to the Lightning's puzzle for the upcoming season.
...
With Tuesday's transaction, the Lightning have 14 players (not including Dave Andreychuk, whose $662,500 counts against the cap) under contract for the 2006-07 season at a cap hit of about $37 million, leaving them about $7 million under the $44 million cap ceiling.
The Lightning have five players from last season who remain restricted free agents — Ruslan Fedotenko, Dmitry Afanasenkov, Cory Sarich, Ryan Craig and Evgeny Artyukhin — and who need to be signed to new deals. The Lightning also recently signed LW Norm Milley to a new two-way deal. Milley, 26, appeared in 14 games for Tampa Bay last season, scoring two goals.

The Tampa Tribune: Fedotenko scored a career-best 26 goals last season. He's eligible to become an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming season.
Tampa Bay general manager Jay Feaster had hoped to extend Fedotenko's contract beyond the 2006-07 season, but Feaster indicated that his flexibility under the $44 million salary cap would not allow it.
However, the GM did say that once the team is allowed by the terms of the collective bargaining agreement to begin contract negotiations on Jan. 1, a new deal could be pursued.
«I don't like having to negotiate contracts during the season, because I think it becomes a distraction," Feaster said. «But in this case, if you wait and you allow the player to hit the open market, in all likelihood we're going to lose him.»
The Lightning already have lost unrestricted free agents Pavel Kubina and John Grahame this summer (as expected), the latest in a string of unrestricted free agents to depart Tampa Bay, including Nikolai Khabibulin and Jassen Cullimore after the Stanley Cup season of 2003-04.
«It's very difficult to find a goal scorer as clutch as that," Feaster said. «Where Ruslan has to work is improving his consistency.»

Tampa Bay Lightning: TBL.com: You are being reunited with Ruslan Fedotenko with the Lightning. Have you talked to him, and how will having him here help your transition?
Richardson: I talked to him the other day. He and his wife, Debbie, offered any help I needed and I told him I’d be calling him in August as things get closer. It’s nice to hear a familiar voice and he said the same thing. It was nice for him to see someone that he knew coming to the team that was around when he came into the league. Hopefully I helped his transition into the NHL and now he can give me a little payback. He’s an experienced guy in Tampa compared to myself which is the new guy in town. He can help me out and point me in the right direction in certain things. It was nice to see him sign back because he is not a typical European player. He is gritty guy that gets under the other team’s skin but he can put the puck in the net at the same time. He is definitely the type of player you want and need on your team.

The Tampa Tribune: When Ruslan Fedotenko and Cory Sarich signed one-year deals this summer, each became eligible for unrestricted free agency on July 1, 2007. Feaster said he would have liked to sign both to multiyear deals, but salary cap restraints prevented the team from buying out years of unrestricted free agency.
The new CBA prevents teams from extending contracts except for players who have a contract set to expire at the end of the season and only after Jan. 1 of the year the contract expires. But only if a team has enough salary cap space in future seasons to accommodate each year of the new deal, no matter the length.
For example, at the end of the 2006-07 season, the contracts for Rob DiMaio, Sean Burke and Dave Andreychuk will expire, clearing up more than $2.7 million in salary cap room for next season.
So if Tampa Bay wanted to sign Sarich or Fedotenko — or anybody else whose contract will expire at the end of the season, including restricted free agents if desired — to a five-year deal, the team would have to prove they have enough cap space — called tag room — for each year of the new deal. Feaster said he intends to open talks to extend the contracts of Sarich and Fedotenko once he is permitted.
«Player after player has left us and we don't have a good track record in this organization of retaining players who hit the open market," Feaster said. «It's incumbent upon us to keep these players and try to sign these players to a long-term deal, then we will [try to negotiate an extension] in a way that it does not create a distraction.»

Damian Cristodero, St. Petersburg Times: Fedotenko had surgery in May to repair a torn labrum, clean up loose cartilage and remove scar tissue from the procedure he had in June 2005.
Lightning trainer Tommy Mulligan said the labrum tear was different than the one repaired last year.
Fedotenko said he still is not sure if his hip will hamper him when training camp starts Thursday, but he is determined to strengthen the muscles around the joint.
...
Is it the player who scored 17 goals in 77 games in 2003-04 or the one who scored 12 in 22 playoff games? Is it the player who scored a career-high 26 goals in 2005-06 or the one shut out in the playoffs?
«To me, it's still that question of consistency," general manager Jay Feaster said. «I'm not in a position, in a salary cap world, to pay him as a regular 25- to 30-(goal) guy or that he is a regular postseason performer when he's so up and down.»

Fedotenko faces familiar situation

St. Petersburg Times: FEDS WILL SIT: Ruslan Fedotenko said he was pleased with how his surgically repaired left hip held up.
Still, the left wing will skip today's three 15-lap skates as a precaution.
As for Saturday's scrimmage, he said, «I'll tell them how I feel and we'll see. I don't want to skate halfway. That's no benefit for anybody.»

St. Petersburg Times: Then I met Ruslan Fedotenko.
«I think we are going to win the whole thing," said the man who scored both goals in the Lightning's 2-1 victory in the final game of the 2004 Stanley Cup. «Right guys? We are going to win.»
Fedotenko, a 27-year-old from Kiev, Ukraine, didn't claim to be a great fisherman, or a star hockey player for that matter. But the left wing was curious as to how he wound up fishing with a newspaper reporter.
«I asked the folks in your media relations office to pair me with the nicest guy on the team," I explained. «I guess you are it.»
Fedotenko blushed, then he thought about it for a moment. «Well, I can be tough, too ...» he said. «Tough on the ice.»
Our charter captain had fished with the hockey player before. Fedotenko has two teenage stepsons, who are going to school and playing hockey in St. Louis.
«My boys love to fish," Fedotenko said. «I wish they could be here today. They would be jealous.»

The Tampa Tribune: The top lines are pretty much set with Vinny Lecavalier centering Vinny Prospal and Ruslan Fedotenko, and Brad Richards between Marty St. Louis and Dmitry Afanasenkov.

Former team captain Dave Andreychuk is rejoining the Tampa Bay Lightning as a Community Representative and will officially retire as a player.

Tampa Bay Lightning: In his new role, Andreychuk will serve as a team liaison with sponsors, suite holders, season ticket holders, local charities and youth hockey programs. He will represent the Lightning at charity fundraisers and speaking engagements while working to identify and develop new business opportunities.
