Well — the NZ Ice Hockey League season is underway — and I havent been very active on news. Apologies.
The league website is here http://nzihl.com/ — and looks like is going to have a revamp shortly — so isnt quite up to date.
Again this season we have the same 5 teams —
Dunedin Thunder,
Southern Stampede (Queenstown)
Canterbury Devils (Christchurch)
West Auckland Admirals (Avondale, West Auckland)
Botany Swarm (Botany, East Auckland)

Melbourne Ice again!!
Reigning champion confirmed title defeating Newcastle North Stars in AIHL final
In front of a packed and vocal home crowd in The Icehouse, Melbourne Ice defeated 3-2 rival Newcastle North Stars keeping AIHL title in Melbourne. As in last year final versus Adelaide, forward Joey Hughes was decisive in Ice victory and was awarded as playoffs MVP (3 goals and 3 assists in playoffs weekend) after the game. North Stars missed the chance to grab its 5th title, honouring coach Don Champagne, at his last game before to quit coaching career.
North Stars top scorer Peter Cartwright, another North Stars already announced his retirement, opened the score at 06:44, but Melbourne equalized already in the first period with Canadian Matthew Armstrong, before to go ahead with goals by Joey Hughes and captain Liam Webster. A late powerplay goal by American Justin Chwedoruk wasn't enough to give Newcastle new hope
AIHL will return next season with a new team from Perth and the newly created Trans-Tasman Champions League, a series played between Australian and New Zealand champions

Botany Swarm champion again
The 2011 New Zealand championship was won by the Botany Swarm, who defeated the Southern Stampede 5-3 in the final.
The Botany Swarm won the regular season of the New Zealand Ice Hockey League (NZIHL) with 12 wins in 16 games. In the final, which was just a single game, the Swarm faced the Southern Stampede, who finished the league on 33 points, the same as the third-place Canterbury Red Devils, but with a better goal difference. The Dunedin Thunder and West Auckland Admirals were far from the final.
Thanks to the better placement in the regular season, Botany played the final game on home ice. The game was a close story. It was tied at 1 after two periods and the Stampede even took the lead when their captain Simon Glass scored early in the third period. But the Swarm’s Estonian import Alex Polozov tied the game with 14 minutes to go and then the Swarm ran off to a 5-3 win.
This was the Swarm’s fourth championship. They were also successful in 2007, 2008 and 2010.
