LA Daily News: «I can score goals and create some goals for the linemates, use my size in the corners, go hard on the forecheck and take the puck to the net," Ponikarovsky said. «I can also be used on the penalty kill and the power play. I'm a two-way forward. I like to take care of our own end first.»
That last sentence will come as music to the ears of Kings head coach Terry Murray, and suggested Ponikarovsky will fit well with the organizational philosophy. Then again, Ponikarovsky was supposed to be a good fit in Pittsburgh when the Maple Leafs traded him to the Penguins in February.

Los Angeles Times: The Kings took a double injury hit Monday when they learned that defenseman Willie Mitchell has a fractured left wrist and left wing Alexei Ponikarovsky has a fractured finger, injuries that occurred during the team's 4-1 victory over Nashville on Saturday.
Neither is expected to need surgery but both will miss significant playing time. A club spokesman said Mitchell will be out four to six weeks and Ponikarovsky is expected to be out about four weeks.

NBC: In the good news/bad news category of injuries, Alexei Ponikarovsky participated in his first full practice today and is reportedly on track to return to the Los Angeles Kings’ lineup on Thursday. The good news is that the Kings will bolster their thin forward corps. The bad news is that they’re doing so by bringing back Ponikarovsky, who has been ineffectual when he’s been able to play (two goals and two assists for four points in 13 games played).

CBS: --LW Alexei Ponikarovsky took quite a fall over the span of three days. Ponikarovsky had been the Kings' first-line left winger in Monday's loss to Toronto. The next day in practice, Ponikarovsky found himself in a fourth-line role, and on Thursday morning, Ponikarovsky was declared a healthy scratch by coach Terry Murray, who explained that he had been unhappy with Ponikarovsky's overall effort against the Maple Leafs.

Sports Illustrated: Heading into this season, the fit between Ponikarovsky and the Kings, one of the more dynamic young offensive units in the league, seemed to be an ideal union. Here was a big left winger who had tallied 61 and 50 points in the last two seasons. No one could have forecast the dreadful campaign that has unfolded for the 6-4, 220-pound winger from Kiev in the Ukraine. He has only seven points in 28 games played and has been shut out completely over his last seven games. This total lack of productivity has seen him take on the status of an afterthought in the Kings lineup, where he is averaging just a shade over 10 minutes of ice time per game in his last four starts.

Los Angeles Times Magazine: «I don't want to put anybody out there but I'd like to see Poni start to score more," Murray said of Alexei Ponikarovsky, who has five goals in 52 games. «His resume shows that he's a 20-, 25-goal scorer and I'd like to see that start to come together.»
Murray said that although Wayne Simmonds' production has fallen from 40 points last season to 27, «the potential is there to put some goals in the net. Just other people have to start to chip in, from the forwards right through to the back end.»

The Carolina Hurricanes made one late move today in free agency, signing veteran forward Alexei Ponikarovsky to a one-year contract for $1.5 million.
Ponikarovsky, 31, played for the Los Angeles Kings last season (5 goals, 10 assists in 61 games) but spent much of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. While with the Leafs, he played for Canes coach Paul Maurice.
«He's a big left winger who can skate," Rutherford said. «He's had a good NHL career except for last year, which was an off-year for him with (groin) injuries. But we do think he's a player who can come here and give us some size with the forwards and be a 20-goal scorer.»
