Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: In case any of the Penguins were in a bad mood following their 4-1 loss to New Jersey on Saturday night, those feelings disappeared within 24 hours. The team held a players-only Halloween Party on Sunday night, and remnants of the party were on display during Monday's practice at Mellon Arena.
Right wing Eric Godard started practice by wearing a Care Bear mask and, later in the 45-minute workout, goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury showcased a Kermit the Frog mask.
Other costumes included center Jordan Staal dressing up as a yellow, peanut M&M, and left wing Ruslan Fedotenko sporting a David Letterman costume.
«My wife's idea," Fedotenko said. «I think it went over pretty well.»

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: It's likely the new lines will be in place when the Penguins play Boston tonight.
Perhaps being separated from longtime wingers Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz will benefit Crosby, who has gone a career-long four games with no points. He skated with wingers Matt Cooke and Ruslan Fedotenko, while Guerin and Kunitz moved to a line with Jordan Staal.
«I feel like it will benefit us," Fedotenko said of the changes, «and who knows —- maybe after the first couple shifts, it will go right back to how it was.»

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Ruslan Fedotenko does not understand why New York Rangers forward Sean Avery attacked him from behind in the Penguins' 8-3 victory Saturday at Mellon Arena.

He just wishes he had gotten an opportunity to defend himself against Avery, who picked up 17 minutes of penalties.

«I didn't even have a chance to bump him, or anything like that, during the game, so whatever happened, I have no clue," Fedotenko said.

«He kind of jumped me from behind. ... I wish he'd given me a heads-up, but that's his kind of game.»

He added that the league should take steps to prevent that from happening more often.

«What prevents anybody from jumping a top player and trying to pound him?» he said «Obviously, [New York winger Marian] Gaborik doesn't want to fight, but what's to prevent me from jumping in and trying to take him and myself out of the game? I will [take that] trade.

«That should be prevented. Maybe if you have a suspension or fines, [fewer] things like that will happen.»

So, yeah; Fedotenko nailed his slang description of the Penguins' No. 2 scoring line during the 2009 playoffs — him, center Evgeni Malkin and forward Max Talbot, who combined for 23 goals and 48 points in 16 games dating to their debut in Game 3 of a second-round series against Washington.

«We were awesome," Fedotenko said. «That is how I would say it.»

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Q: Do you think Max Talbot's absence has had anything to do with Ruslan Fedotenko and Evgeni Malkin's slow start this year? It seems that Max especially helped Fedotenko elevate his game during the playoffs.

MOLINARI: Fedotenko actually has a reputation for elevating his game during the playoffs —- or is it underachieving during the regular season? —- whether he has Talbot for a linemate or not. To suggest that Talbot's absence and/or reduced effectiveness had a major impact on Fedotenko's mostly lackluster performance to date (a few strong games of late aside) is giving Fedotenko an excuse that isn't merited.

Effective as those two were with Malkin during the playoffs last spring, Talbot's game is better-suited to a third- or fourth-line role —- that's not to overlook his well-documented knack for raising his game when the stakes go up —- and, as noted above, Fedotenko simply doesn't do anything special most of the time during the regular season.

Their play certainly does not explain or justify Malkin's disappointing work for much of this season, but it would be pretty tough to argue that he's had linemates who can bring out the best in his game, either. In the salary-cap era, though, well-paid superstars are going to have to accept the reality that their supporting cast might not complement their game as well as they would like.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Mustache drama

The Penguins staged a shootout at practice's end to determine which player will sport a mustache during February.

Ruslan Fedotenko, whose ability to grow anything resembling a mustache might be in question, was the unlucky loser. Mike Rupp and Fedotenko were the final contestants, but Rupp's between-the-legs shot was enough to beat goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

«What you do is you dummy the goalies for eight rounds," Rupp said. «And they're like, 'This guy's pathetic,' and then you go for it.»

Had Rupp lost the shootout, he would have produced an interesting mustache.

«My mustache has a Hulk Hogan vibe to it," he said. «It gets really blonde.»

Rupp isn't sure that anyone will notice Fedotenko's growth.

"Feds has already been growing his for a month," Rupp said.

Меня очень тронуло то, что парень не забыл свои корни и не стесняется своих украинских корней (ведь многие эмигранты из Украины забыли о своих корнях).

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Fedotenko's injury not serious

Winger Ruslan Fedotenko missed practice because he aggravated an injury, Bylsma said. Bylsma did not reveal the nature of the injury but indicated it is not considered serious.

«He's going to get two days of rest to, hopefully, clear that up, and we expect him to back with us in practice on Sunday," Bylsma said.

The Penguins are scheduled to have today off.

Fedotenko helps Pens defeat Sabres

Ruslan Fedotenko had a goal and an assist and Sidney Crosby – in his first game since winning the Olympics for Canada – set up Sergei Gonchar’s 200th career goal to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins past the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Fedotenko, an inconsistent scorer all season, put Pittsburgh up 3-1 at 11:03 of the third – a goal the Penguins needed after Derek Roy scored at 15:21 on a shot that wasn’t originally ruled a goal.

Gonchar, who played for non-medalist Russia during the Olympics, put the Penguins up 1-0 with a shot from the point during a power play at 14:58 of the first, with Alex Goligoski and Crosby assisting. Buffalo began the game with the NHL’s top-rated penalty killing unit.

Pascal Dupuis made it 2-0 by taking Fedotenko’s pass along the goal line and beating Lalime inside the near post at 3:13 of the second.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Penguins left wing Ruslan Fedotenko avoided serious injury early in the first period despite enduring a vicious hit from behind by Tampa Bay defenseman Matt Lashoff.

Fedotenko, who scored both goals in Game 7 of the 2004 Stanley Cup Final for the Lightning, missed about 10 minutes of action after being hit 2:22 into the first period. He remained on the ice for a couple of minutes and was motionless for a time, but eventually made his way — with assistance — to the locker room. Fedotenko returned with 8:15 to play in the period.

Lashoff, who has played 59 career NHL games, had just been recalled from Tampa's AHL affiliate in Norfolk. He was given a game misconduct. The hit marked the first major penalty of Lashoff's career.

Penguins' Fedotenko could get playoff hook

If Ruslan Fedotenko is the new Petr Sykora, then Bylsma will have made an early move that should sound an alarm for any Penguins player whom the coach deems isn't prepared to play in the playoff pressure cooker.
Scratching Fedotenko, who scored seven of his 20 career playoff goals last spring for the Penguins, would re-enforce that the Penguins need to perform with more efficiency, patience and determination in the offensive zone.

Ponikarovsky was no more impressive with only two hits and just a shot. That was his first playoff game since 2004, though he offered no excuses for a disappointing postseason debut with the Penguins.
If he isn't prepared for Game 2, perhaps Ponikarovsky will be Captain Hook's next victim.
